V CIMJ INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
MEDIA, DEMOCRACY AND CITIZENSHIP
IN THE DIGITAL AGE

10-11 NOVEMBER, 2014
ORGANIZATION: CENTER FOR MEDIA & JOURNALISM RESEARCH
FACULTY OF SOCIAL AND HUMAN SCIENCES - NEW UNIVERSITY OF LISBON - PORTUGAL

Since 1999, with the emergence of web 2, the media landscape has changed profoundly, allowing individuals to publish, share and republish content on the web using simple and accessible tools. The Web 2 brought easier and better connectivity, collaboration and communication among users around the world, while Web 2.0 has accelerated the network society. Unlike the previous hierarchical and centralized mode of information production, citizens using simple tools to create content, can now freely create their "niche " audiences, based on their own interests as members of a community.

Since individuals are not motivated by financial compensation but by social forms of gratification, this social form of production occurs outside the models based on the market and the price of production. The new forms of communication afforded by the digital pose new challenges to the media and journalism in their relation with both democracy and citizenship. To reflect on these challenges, the Centre for Journalism and Media Research calls for proposals for oral presentations, thematic panels and original audiovisual productions, under the theme of the Conference: MEDIA, DEMOCRACY AND CITIZENSHIP IN THE DIGITAL AGE.
